Sarah's story
CanBead was founded in 2010 by a courageous woman named Sarah Clifford following her personal experience with cancer. Sarah was diagnosed with melanoma in October 2008 at the age of 28. Whilst undergoing treatment in Christchurch in February 2010, she was given an assortment of beads, wire and the tools for making jewellery. During her 28 days of radiation treatment she created and wore a different necklace each day. This process not only provided distraction and recreation, but also a sense of purpose and accomplishment. These necklaces were later auctioned off at the Ashburton Cancer Society rooms, and raised over $3,000 for the Cancer Society and the start up cost of CanBead. This process of giving back in such a tangible and positive manner was incredibly rewarding and was just the beginning for CanBead.
CanBead was born
Our intention at CanBead is to give others affected by illness, trauma or loss the same help that Sarah was given. We hold free workshops, where we give away CanBead Kits and show others how to create jewellery. We have some lovely volunteers who help break up donated necklaces, assemble the kits and assist at the workshops. CanBead Kits are funded from donations, grants and from the thousands of donated beads that have come to CanBead since this all began.

CanBead Workshops offer participants hands on guidance and support so they can create their own necklaces and earrings. The CanBead Kit participants are given contains all that is needed to make beautiful jewellery. With the CanBead Kit and the skills learned in the workshop, participants have the ability to make fabulous jewellery on their own. In this way CanBead Kits provide a wonderful distraction from illness and treatment, but also a chance for the user to gain a real sense of achievement and to spend creative, positive time with other people.
